The Rice Report: Battle of the Beats 2

Posted by Jesus Rice on May 9, 2011 – 12:00 am

Sample clearance has long been a controversial subject matter in the entertainment industry. Since the explosion of hip hop a few decades ago, artists have been known to take portions of old school soul and funk classics and rehash them into a modern rendition more suitable for their genre and era. This lead to feelings being hurt and was followed by lawsuits since some of these sampled artists felt like they were getting their creations thieved. In my opinion, sampling is more of an tribute and a sign of respect for the original artist, by remixing your track we don’t duplicate but we innovate in our own way. If you’ve been sampled, that means people like your shit and someone out there is listening to you. Only crybabies and people who don’t understand how the streets work will file lawsuit and try to eat off your plate. Let’s face it, rap comes from the streets and in the streets we take shit from you and ask questions later. You don’t run to the law, you settle that shit by your lonesome. But hey… I guess in the corporate world it works differently and money keeps the wheels turning.

For our beat battle today, we’ve decided to use a song from one of the most notorious lawsuit-seekers in the industry: Supertramp. You might remember Fabolous’ single “Breathe” where he sampled a few seconds off their ‘Crime of the Century’ song. Fab never cleared the track with the group before it leaked and homeboy got shaken down for 100% of his publishing. Scary shit indeed, it’s no wonder why there was never any promo for that album. After all the corporate legal bullying and industry scare tactics, the only normal Mook-Life thing to do was to rob these Supertramp dudes once again for one of their songs and have a bunch of producers chop the shit out of it. We ain’t making any cake out here, so if any Supertramp representative gets salty over this you can sue us for the stack of Canadian Tire money hidden in my couch and the 4 Pabst Blue Ribbons left in my fridge. Here is the sample:

Put in a vote at the end in the poll or a vote in the comments section, the winner gets a 50$ gift certificate to Sub V, a bag of weed and an all inclusive tour of Bordeaux prison with complimentary Baloney sandwich. Had to vote Teknition. When they make a movie about me I want that beat in the sound track. It sounds like it would be good for a scene where I’m driving around Pittsburgh at night blowing kush smoke in slow motion while reflecting on just how dope I am.
