Photography Spotlight: The Filtered Life

Posted by Hard To Offend on December 12, 2011 – 4:20 am

Something happened in the ’90s. To think of it, a lot of things happened in the ’90s, but some affected us more then others. Wu-Tang is one of them. The internet is another. The digital era rendered analog obsolete and made it possible for everyone to be connected. Now we have touchscreen iPhones with 8mp HD cameras that store thousands of songs and full-length movies in a tiny, slick-looking device. We are in the future. Technology done changed the game. With about 1000$, any mook can now buy the necessary tools to become an over night rapper, DJ, composer, producer, directer or photographer. As a result, there is a glowing mass of oversaturation in all these respected disciplines, so much so that people are now getting famous purely for their curating skills, especially when it comes to photography. However, in this giant ocean of spoiled cunts who are all dying to share their lives with with the rest of the digital world through social media outlets, blogs and forums, certain individual stand out.

If we have proven anything with Mook Life so far, is that we can make the most overlooked aspects of our retarded lives seem so fucking awesome. It’s not what you say, it’s how you say it, if you know what I’m saying. When I discovered The Filtered Life, I was instantly stoked. Not only are the photos on point, the updates are frequent and the content is always all-original. I could immediately tell these were the doings of a Montreal-based photographer who seems to enjoy many of the subjects that we regularly expose on our site. It was only right for me to contact the mook so that I can share these visual darts with the rest of you. So without further ado, here is a small taste of The Filtered Life.

First thing I noticed was that dude is a huge pothead. I always wonder why I’m so obsessed with documenting my drug problem and often come to the conclusion that it’s childish but, for some reason, I just can’t stop doing it. So when I see another grown-ass man do the same, I feel less bad about my obsession. Thanks bud.

The second thing that caught my eye was the themed photoshoots. Make sure to credit this man when you steal these flicks for your Tumblr and the shit goes viral, ’cause I’m sure this will happen sooner or later.

Some might say that the analog texture has a lot more soul than our new, clean-cut digital sound and look. I would have to agree. We can Hipstermatic that shit all we want, it will never feel 100% the same. We might come close and we might even surpass the quality of the sound and image, but it will always lack the warmth that the analog tools are known to deliver. Most people took the leap and now work with digital media because it has become the standard. Others still do it the old-fashioned way: rolls of film and hours in the darkroom, something I highly respect when done for the sheer love of the art rather than filling in hipster stereotypes.

The man’s affinity towards sneakers also struck my eye when I’d peeped the site. I remember about five years back, every other mook and his sorry mother was into sneakers. Now most them are desperately trying to sell them off ’cause it ain’t trendy no more. People are funny like that.

This could’ve definitely been a part of our Street Weapons post we did a few months back. Those Canadian Tire BB guns are classic. Nuff birds got hurt around my neck of the woods with those ratchets.

Snowdon is a definite hot-spot for catching people sleeping in public. I love how this man has his hands crossed. Quite the elegant approach to this ancient art. Nuff respect.

I can also relate to all the photos of shit he finds on the ground. Taking photos of garbage on the floor is one of my passions. Most of you already know from the  My Kind Of Street Art posts.

Having a camera is the first step. Dragging it around all the time and taking the flicks is the second one. Getting them out of your camera and on to a computer or printing them is the third. If you can get these things together, you are off to a good start. However, having the eye is something that can’t be bought or taught. It’s something that comes naturally. When you have all those things on lock, that’s when you start to stand out from the rest of these mooks that claim to be photographers. This is just my opinion.

It was hard for me to chose from all the flicks and I find that this post does not fully represent the wide extent of this man’s talent. It took me a couple of hours to browse through the whole blog and I enjoyed every single second of it. To all our followers, I highly suggest you roll a fat spliff, crack a brew, put on some good music, sit back and enjoy The Filtered Life.

It smells hipsterism all over the place if you ask me… Anyhow, it’s alright to find some affinities with other inner city subcultures… Nice pics…

Yeah, shit is mad hipstered-out no doubt. I don’t know the dude so I can only appreciate his work and his work is pretty fresh IMO. Being a hipster is a norm in the inner city these days. It is inevitable for us to cross paths with them at one point or another.

this flicks are iller than anything you could shoot, and if not, you prolly would be featured…but oh wait,,,,,,, y’all aren’t!!!!
sadly, if these images were half as original and strictly feautred appropriated graffiti content y’all would be drooling and on mook-life’s dick as per usual.

DOPE FLICKS. respect talent for what it is instead of hiding behind your mook safezone hating on what you cant do.

Common now. Don`t need to get all salty. This is not a fucking debate about hipsters. There is no mook safezone. People wanna be gay, it`s their problem. We are not promoting the fact that this dude rocks tight jeans we are sharing his work with our viewers since it touches a lot of what we post on our site. Any further comments about ”hipster this mook that” will not be approved.
