Philly Handstyles

Posted by Killah-EF on October 31, 2011 – 11:49 am

Man, I love that Philly graffiti shit. I finally found myself in a city with no stencils, street art or hipster graffiti. There’s none of that shit. It’s straight up graffiti, raw and dirty. As you saw in the Norf Filthy post from last week, Philly hands are truly inspired by the hood griminess, so you already know what to expect: nuffin but that real gutter-butter, baby!

Understand: the Philly style is a local craft that can only be learned in Philadelphia and if you did not grow up there, your bitch-ass will never be able to apply that rich craft. We’ve all tried to stretch out our tags at some point or another of our careers, but we all know that it will never be an original Philly style. The Philly style is more than just a stretched-out tag with arrows, stars, peace signs, smiley faces and crowns: it’s a unique uniform font. Normal human beings see Philly tags as nasty scribbles, while native Philadelphian writers see them as an outstanding masterpiece. You get to really love these tags once you study their math, each aspect and character of their flow. From simple Philly tags to the Wickeds, it’s nuffin but raw material, mad flavour to your dome, kid. It’s like they say: “If it ain’t got that whip, it ain’t worth shit!”

Straight up and down, Philly got one of the richest graff scenes in the world. Please note that none of these pictures were submitted to me, nor was this post made to represent Philadelphia graffiti. Let’s not get it twisted tho. Understand it’s just a random selection of tags: a few out of many millions. The selection does in no way reflect what’s really been popping in Philly. They’re simply the tags I encountered during my last stay in the P-Zone. Like with any big city around the world, it’s real hard to represent the city’s Graff scene through a tiny amount of flicks. Many Kings, Legends and Icons are unfortunately not featured, so do not take this post as history course ‘cuz a lot of history is missing. I only been there two days, so I thought I’d bring back from fresh Philadelphia that banging flavour for you young Mooks.
